The pursuit of success has become such a challenging race these days, it is easy to run ourselves down. Whether you are building a business or chasing hard after that promotion, it can be easy to rack up tons of hours at work.

Before long, our exercise routine falls by the wayside and we start consuming fast food due to the lack of time for cooking at home. Soon after, we fall ill or suffer a breakdown, at which time the health care system sweeps in to put us back together again.

By embracing self-care as a philosophy, we can snuff out serious health problems while they are still insignificant gnats. Let's talk about a few tenets of this philosophy below.


Find your inner happiness through gratitude journaling

Most people view happiness as something which can be pursued and captured. However, this feeling can only be summoned from within – no amount of partying, eating, acquisition of wealth, or shopping can secure this feeling on a lasting basis.

Want to experience happiness consistently? You must look within yourself and change how you think about your existence. Embracing gratitude journaling is a great way to achieve this goal, as it redirects the focus your mind onto all the good things going on in your life.

By expressing appreciation for the roof over your head, the heat that flows out of your furnace vent and the tasty vermicelli bowl you just had for lunch, you'll train your brain to see life as a beautiful affair, interrupted on occasion by the occasional speed hump. 


Tend to your aches and pains – don't ignore them

Most people tend to soldier on through adversity, treating the pain they feel as an obstacle to be overcome. Let's be honest, though: aches or pains are your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. You risk pushing your body and soul too far if you ignore these signals. Do this, and you'll end up suffering an illness, injury, or emotional breakdown.

Drained after a long day at work? Treat yourself to a hot bubble bath, hit up a hot tub or sauna at a local community centre, or take an extra-long shower. This will melt the tension out of your muscles, making it easier to get a good night's sleep.

Joints bothering you on a regular basis? Get checked out by your doctor, as you might be suffering through the early stages of a disorder like arthritis. As scary as that sounds, treatments are available to alleviate your aching elbow, so get off the fence and get to the root of whatever is causing the problem.


Find and cook meals that are good for you – and taste awesome too

The meals we choose to eat has a profound effect on our lives. Unfortunately, we have become addicted to convenience foods in the modern era – this is a huge problem, as the empty calories and mass quantities of salt/fat they contain are overshadowed by their tastiness.

This has led to the development of the notion that eating healthfully and enjoying flavourful food are mutually exclusive pursuits – know that this simply isn't true.  There are plenty of vegetarian/vegan/paleo/keto food bloggers who have published recipes that have changed the game for those trying to overhaul their diet – you can have your gluten-free cake and eat it too.

With a few creative substitutions (e.g. stevia for when a recipe calls for sugar, almond flour instead of wheat flour, etc.), it is possible to eat amazing food which is healthy. 


An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Preventive health measures are just as important as the treatments offered when you get hurt/sick. By taking care of yourself when something is amiss, you can avoid these situations, and in doing so, set the table for a healthy and happy future.
